Are you planning your trip from the UK to Tuscany? This enchanting region, known for its rolling hills with breathtaking, diverse landscapes, art cities and extraordinary food, is one of the most sought-after destinations for travellers from all over the world, including many tourists from the UK. If you’re one of them, let’s explore how to plan your journey together. Below you’ll find practical, detailed information to help you prepare for your arrival and, later, to get around the region without stress or wasted time.
Direct flights: the most convenient option
The easiest and fastest way to reach Tuscany from the UK is by taking a direct flight from several cities in England and Scotland. However, if you’re flying from Wales or Northern Ireland, you’ll need to make a stopover.
Flights to Pisa and Florence
Pisa. Galileo Galilei Airport is one of the most accessible options for travellers from the UK. Several airlines, including EasyJet and British Airways, offer direct flights from London (Gatwick, Heathrow and Stansted), Manchester, Birmingham, Bristol, Edinburgh and Glasgow. Flights from English cities take just over 2 hours, while departures from Scotland require about 30 minutes more. Once you land in Tuscany, if you’re heading straight to Florence, you can take a shuttle that quickly connects to Pisa’s central train station, where you’ll find several direct trains to the Tuscan capital.Another option is to take one of the buses that leave from the square outside the airport. But also consider that, before heading to Florence, you could take a taxi and, in just 10-15 minutes, reach the famous Piazza del Duomo in Pisa, popularly known as the Square of Miracles, where you can admire the iconic Leaning Tower.

Florence. This beautiful and fascinating city is Tuscany’s most visited. Its airport, Amerigo Vespucci, is served by direct flights from London and Edimburgh, with British Airways and Vueling operating the routes.
Other airports
Besides Pisa and Florence, other Italian cities are well connected with the UK. If you’d like to include a stop in one of the following destinations, consider flying into:
Bologna. Located in the heart of Emilia-Romagna, Bologna is a great choice, as you can reach Florence in just 40 minutes by high-speed train or in about an hour and a half by car. However, keep in mind that getting around Florence by car, especially finding parking, can be quite challenging, particularly for those unfamiliar with the city. So, if you plan to tour the region after visiting Florence, we recommend renting a car only once you’re ready to leave the Tuscany capital.
Rome. The so-called Eternal City is always worth visiting and is very well connected to the UK. From Rome, you can take a high-speed train to Florence (a journey of about an hour and a half) or rent a car to explore the surrounding areas, returning it once you arrive in Florence, for the reasons mentioned above.
Getting around once you arrive

Once in Tuscany, you’ll need to plan how you’ll get around. Here are some options:
- Car rental. If you want the freedom to explore Tuscany at your own pace, renting a car is the best option. This allows you to visit small towns and charming villages nestled among the famous hills of this wonderful land, making your stay even more special. Both Pisa and Florence airports have several rental agencies, and driving through the Tuscan countryside is a truly enjoyable experience.
- Train. For those who prefer not to drive, trains from Pisa and Florence stations can take you to places like Siena, Arezzo, Lucca, San Gimignano and many more, though you may need to change trains sometimes. Here’s the official site for schedules, prices and tickets: https://www.trenitalia.com/en/html
- Bus. For some destinations, buses can be a good alternative, both in terms of time and cost. More info here: https://www.at-bus.it/en
- Taxi. This is certainly the fastest and most direct option, but also the most expensive. A taxi ride from Florence Airport to the city centre costs around € 30, and from Pisa Airport to its own about € 15. Reaching rural areas like Chianti, however, can easily cost over € 100.

When is the best time to visit Tuscany?
One of the most important factors to consider when planning your trip to Tuscany is the climate. This region is a fantastic destination year-round, but certain seasons offer particularly special experiences. Here’s what to expect in the different times of the year:
- Spring (April – June). Spring is one of the best times to visit Tuscany. The climate is mild and pleasant, with sunny days that aren’t too hot. The countryside bursts into bloom with flowers and colour, making it perfect for nature lovers.
- Summer (July – August). Summers are hot, with temperatures often exceeding 30°C, but it’s also a lively season full of events, exhibitions, festivals and local fairs. For some locations, especially seaside towns, it’s advisable to book in advance.

- Autumn (September – October). Autumn is another much-loved time to visit. Temperatures are still pleasant, and the hills turn into a spectacular palette of warm colours. It’s also harvest season, making food and wine experiences even more exciting. Autumn in Tuscany is perfect for those seeking a romantic and peaceful atmosphere.
- Winter (November – March). If you’re looking for a quieter, more intimate Tuscany, winter might be ideal. While temperatures can get quite chilly, art cities are much less crowded, allowing for a more relaxed experience. During this time, a more moderate tourism lets you discover the deepest essence of the region.
As we’ve seen, getting to Tuscany from the UK is relatively easy thanks to the wide range of direct flights and the many transport options available once you land in Italy. Whether you choose to fly into Pisa or Florence, or opt for other airports that let you explore neighboring regions as well, Tuscany will welcome you with its natural beauty, rich artistic heritage and outstanding food and wine.
This region offers something for every season, allowing you to tailor your trip to your personal preferences.
